Abstract

The article explores the relationship between theology and social transformation in Brazil throughout the 20th century, focusing on the evangelical thought. The analysis is divided into three typologies: the evangelical civilizing project, the revolutionary vision, and the conservative reaction. The civilizing project, driven by early Protestant missions, promoted values such as education and morality, aiming for social transformation aligned with Christian principles. In contrast, the revolutionary vision emerged in response to social injustices, proposing a politically engaged theology. Meanwhile, the conservative reaction was consolidated during the military regime, aligning with authoritarian values and distancing itself from progressive positions. The study demonstrates that the evangelical political and social thought in Brazil is multifaceted, interacting in a complex and conflicting manner throughout the century. The analysis highlights how these movements shaped the collective identity and role of evangelicals in the Brazilian public life.
