Abstract

On the eve of the so-called Battle of Salado (1340), in a speech attributed to Afonso IV by the reworker of the Livro de Linhagens around 1380, the Portuguese monarch reminded his vassals of the series of battles that had opposed Christians and Muslims across the Iberian history. The confrontation about to take place along the banks of the Salado River was presented as part of a broader narrative that began with the loss of Spain and extended through the reconquest of those lands by their Christian forebears. These narratives were compiled between the 1320s and 1340s in the Livro de Linhagens and the Crónica de 1344, both authored by Pedro Afonso de Barcelos, and later underwent multiple reworkings during the 14th century. This study seeks to analyze the inter- and intratextual established between theses texts and, ultimately, to demonstrate how, from the authorial project of the Count of Barcelos to the interpolations of anonymous reworkers, the reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula was established as a collective memory, one capable of conferring meaning upon the Battle of Salado.
